What is Keto?

January 5 was first established as National Keto Day in 2019 by the Vitamin Shoppe. At Sweet Perfections, we celebrate keto year-round! About two years ago, we introduced our four varieties of keto cookies, and in early 2021, we introduced our chocolate and vanilla keto cakes and cupcakes. And our customers have been as excited about them as we are!

The goal of a ketogenic lifestyle is for the body to enter a metabolic state called ketosis, which is when the body converts fat into ketones for energy – instead of using glucose from carbohydrates and sugar. A keto diet consists of very few carbs, a moderate amount of protein, and high levels of fat. The body uses dietary and stored fat to fuel itself, so frequently the goal of adopting this lifestyle is weight loss. Keto can also be recommended to manage other health conditions, such as epilepsy in children and diabetes.

Co-owners Ken and Peggy have a few close friends and colleagues who have started a keto lifestyle due to serious health concerns. After much research and development (code for taste testing!), Ken and Peggy adapted cookie and cake recipes to fit the keto parameters.

You’ve heard of “killing two birds with one stone.” Well, maybe our keto products are more along the lines of “having all bases covered.” Keto is like the center of a Venn diagram where the overlapping circles are low-carb, gluten-free, and often sugar-free. This means that while you might not be in need of keto products specifically, our keto treats can still fit the requirements of other dietary needs!

While we’re on the subject of other dietary restrictions, if you search “eggless” on our website, you’ll find the treats that fit that description as well. Do note that our shoppe is not a nut-free or gluten-free environment, so there is a possibility of cross-contamination.

If you’re interested in ingredients that might make your recipes more keto-friendly, consider items like monk fruit, almond flour, sugar-free chocolate chips, and all-natural, sugar-free sprinkles. Like we mentioned in our cookie-focused blog, find a recipe that specifically calls for these ingredients instead of assuming a straight one-to-one substitution.

If you are starting the new year with a new low carb, sugar-free, gluten-free, or keto intention, we are here to help you have your cake and eat it keto, too!

Fresh from our oven to yours – happy baking!
