The Piña Colada

The flavors in our Piña Colada Cupcake come from the famous Caribbean cocktail whose name is Spanish for “strained pineapple.” Creamy and cool, the rum, coconut, and pineapple mix well with our whipped custard and signature buttercream.

Before we explore the origin of the piña colada, we’ll start with a recipe for making the drink. In fact, it is the original recipe – well, according to the Caribe Hilton. Keep scrolling for other tasty recipes to add to your repertoire.

CRAFT THE COCKTAIL

Ingredients

2 oz white rum (Puerto Rican brand Don Q claims to be the original one used)
1 oz coconut cream (Coco Lopez to be authentic)
1 oz heavy cream
6 oz fresh pineapple juice
5 cups crushed ice
Fresh pineapple and cherry to garnish

Steps

  1. Pour ingredients into a blender.
  2. Blend until smooth.
  3. Serve in a tall glass.
  4. Garnish with fresh pineapple and a cherry.

WHERE DID THIS DELECTABLE DRINK COME FROM?

The short answer: Puerto Rico, known as the Rum Capital of the World. Pineapples and coconuts are both cultivated there, so the combination of ingredients was inevitable.

One origin story is that pirate Roberto Cofresí created the drink for his crew, though the recipe was lost with his execution in 1825. The next batch of legends are from the 1950s and 1960s. More than one bar and bartender claim to have created the piña colada, including Ramón “Monchito” Marrero Pérez at San Juan’s Caribe Hilton (where the above recipe is from).

Ultimately cementing its place in local history, the piña colada was declared the official drink of Puerto Rico in 1978. We are happy to take a sip and picture ourselves under their palm trees!

OTHER OPTIONS TO TRY

If you like coconut and pineapple but not rum, you can make an amaretto colada by substituting amaretto for the rum, Scotsman colada by substituting Scotch, or a chi chi by substituting vodka. Add to the flavor profile with a Kahlúa colada, made by subbing in – you guessed it – Kahlúa. If you can’t choose between a piña colada and a strawberry daiquiri, combine them to make a lava flow. Add a vacation on the beach with an ocean breeze for optimal flavor!

¡Salud!

Fresh from our oven to yours – happy baking, um, drinking!
